Coffee from Baja Verapaz in eastern Guatemala is shaped by exceptional conditions and a strong farming tradition. It grows at 1,400–1,800 meters above sea level under forest canopy, within the Mesoamerican dry and cloud forest biological corridor. This rich biodiversity supports resilient, sustainable farming and shows in the cup as clarity and liveliness.
The region’s volcanic and limestone soils are nutrient-rich, and the cool 16–20°C climate combined with high elevation slows cherry maturation, allowing more sugars and a more developed acid structure to form. Farming communities—many belonging to the Poqomchi’ and Q’eqchi’ peoples—work with regenerative practices, focusing on diversified shade, protecting water microbasins, and harvesting only ripe cherries.
In the highlands of Rabinal, coffee has been a way of life for generations. Over 80% of producers farm plots smaller than two hectares, and quality is pursued through varieties such as Caturra, Pacamara, and Geisha. Farming and processing practices have been improved in a long-term, intentional way, and as a result the region is increasingly producing coffees that meet the highest quality standards.
