'Washed' – processed Rwandan coffee from our new green coffee partner, Muraho Trading Company, and their copartner Vunga Cooperative. An incredibly fruity coffee, with notes of lime, raspberry, and a delicate floral touch.
Muraho Trading Company owns several processing stations throughout Rwanda, but this coffee comes from their partner, Vunga Cooperative. The cooperative runs a processing station in the Nyabihu region in northwestern Rwanda, near the borders of Uganda and Congo. Vunga, founded in 2009, is a women-led cooperative lead by Daphrose Uwimana. The collaboration between Vunga and Muraho began in 2017, and since then, the quality of the coffee processed at the station has improved year after year. Vunga exclusively produces washed-processed coffee. The cooperative consists of around 180 smallholder farmers from the region, who bring their coffee to the station for processing. The washing station is nestled in the hills of Nyabihu, surrounded by thousands of banana trees.
In recent years, Vunga’s washing station has suffered from landslide in 2020, which not only destroyed their facilities but also tragically claimed the lives of 28 farmers. Muraho Trading, together with Raw Material and the Rwandan government, rebuilt the station so that coffee processing could continue in the area.
