This coffee, originating from East Africa, Burundi, from the Kayanza region and the Matongo washing station, is a fine example of the excellence of Burundian coffee! The coffee features fruity notes like peach and blackberry, along with a subtle floral hint, balanced by a gentle sweetness and wine-like tannins.
Coffee farms in Burundi are usually small, typically only a few hectares in size. As a result, coffees are almost always sold under the name of the washing station or cooperative, which collects and processes the harvests from hundreds or even thousands of local producers. This is also the case with this particular coffee from the Matongo washing station. The coffee has undergone double fermentation (both dry and wet fermentation) and has been washed processed, ensuring a bright and fruity coffee.
Matongo comes from our new green coffee partner, JNP Coffee, run by Jeanine Niyonzima-Aroian. They work with thousands of small producers and several washing stations in Burundi, which are their partners. JNP ensures quality and trains their partners in better practices, rewarding them with additional premiums when their coffees meet certain quality standards.
