This is the Peaberry outcome of the Top 10 of the micro lot competition held in Tarqui, Huila, in August. Tarqui is in the Central Cordillera of the Andes Mountains, with coffee growing in altitudes up to 2000 masl, and with rich and varied micro climates. In the northern part the main harvest is in July-August and the mitaka or mid-harvest is in November-December. In the southern parts this is reversed. This means it is possible to have fresh coffee in from Tarqui all year. The farmers are small, having 1-3 hectares each, and are often organized in groups.

We roast and ship the coffees on wednesdays.

Mahembe is a privately owned washing station, owned by Justin Musabyiama who is also growing his own coffee trees. Justin has grown up in the local area and after moving away for some time decided to come back home and invest in the community he was from by building a wet mill on his father’s coffee plantation.

He has an 8-hectare farm of his own, and is buying cherries from the surrounding smallholders. This area is not as well known for quality coffees as some other parts of Rwanda but has great altitudes and an increasing number of farmers growing coffee at the higher altitudes. Nevertheless, we have found this coffee to be unique, with differences from other coffees in Rwanda in general, and with great potential.

The way Justin has organized the operations and the work he is doing on the ground on quality improvements and close follow up on production gives great results in the cup.

We roast and ship the coffee beans on wednesdays.

Muruta is a classic Burundi profile, with red fruit, intense flavour and sweetness which often gets shadowed unfairly by the Kenyans and Ethiopians. Definitely worth a try if you like coffees from Africa!

Buziraguhindwa Washing Station is the second out of two washing stations owned by the producer Salum Ramadhan. Muruta is a commune lying on the slopes of the Kibira National Park in the Provence of Kayanza. Coffee is from the surroundings of the washing station. Farms in Burundi is small, often below one hectar each with some hundred trees. This means that a daily lot of e.g. 25 bags of greens can consist of coffee from some hundred growers.

Despite a lot of deforestation, Burundi is still fertile. With altitudes up to 2000 meters, volcanic soils, and rainfall of 1300 mm per year, the growing conditions are good. Today there are thousands of smallholder coffee farmers with some hundred coffee trees each that delivers their cherries to the communal washing stations for processing.

We roast and ship the coffees on wednesdays.
